Madame Le Tron had taken her seat in the overstuffed
armchair that the recyle-tron, ol’ Joe, had brought in. A large leather-covered storybook, the title
almost worn away with reverence and time, rested upon her knee. As she began to
read the age- old story to the ones she so dearly loved, a sense of ceremony
and tradition settled upon the room….
A Christmas Story
By Le Tron
Once upon a
time, in a cold, barren, left-over land called After–Before, a winter storm of
epic proportions, was about to roll-in.
Eddie, the
simple son of Queen Ezra-Rye-Elle and King Davide, had been placed in his cage
and dropped down below the Belowe.
‘Always below
The Belowe is where I go,’ the disheartened man-child thought. ‘If just once
they could see me, not just see me as
I am.’ But all any one of them ever saw was Eddie, simple Eddie -- presumed to
be flawed.
Footsteps
flapped with thunder above Eddie’s cage in the Kingdom of The Belowe.
“News from
the Front, Sire!” decreed Emperor Number One.
“Be about
it,” King Davide instructed the Number One.
“The storm,
now referred to by our Command as “Tempest IV…”
“Oh,
Davide!” exclaimed the Queen.
“Hold,
Ezra-Elle!” the great King intoned, as
he gestured to Emperor Number One to go on.
The giant penguin
bowed deep and low to the Sovereign King of The Belowe.
“We believe,
Sire, that the time draws nigh. We have
all of our mechanicals now in the sky.
Each of the mounds that are within our charge have been draped in
lavender and sealed, as is the custom. From The Above, we shall be no more than
black and white and lavender-blue.”
“Very well
then. It has begun. You may recede,” pronounced the King.
With the
slightest hesitation, as if there was something more to say, the giant penguin
Emperor Number One bowed once again in solemn significance as he backed
away.
His Guard,
made up of twenty and four exactly like him, parted to let the Number One pass
and, in one fell-swoop, turned on their heels and flapped thunderously out into
the great hall. The rock solid door of the Throne Room closed in tomb-like
silence behind them.
In his cage below
The Belowe, Eddie slid to his knees, listening to the retreat of the Number
One’s Guard and the silence that followed.
There had
been many times in Eddie’s forever that he had been sent to his cage below the
Belowe, but this time it was somehow different.
Perhaps it
was the onset of the winter storm, or the formality of the Guard, or the
stiffness of Emperor Number One as he watched as Eddie was taken from the
King’s Throne Room to be placed in his cage in the below.
As Eddie
replayed the scene in his head, he realized for the first time he could recall in
his forever that the Number One did not nod his head in Eddie’s direction as he
passed by.
‘Strange.’ The Number One always nodded, and once his missive for Eddie’s father, the King of
the Belowe, was complete, he would come below The Belowe and offer Eddie a
treat.
In the
King’s Throne Room, now sealed away from any eye that might pry, Ezra-Rye-Elle
threw herself at her husband’s feet.
“Ella-
Ella-Rye, beloved wife, pray do not cry.
Stand, my dearest Ella-Rye. You know the time is nigh. We cannot remain forever. We must end to
begin, just as we began, to come to this end.
“Eddie is a
babe no more, and this world cannot contain him. For him to begin, this world must go, and it
is the will of the Manager who will make it so.”
The Queen
rose. Her beauty profoundly apparent as she wiped away a single tear with her
silken black flipper, “I am well aware of all that the Good Book says, my
Lord. And, all of these years I have
wanted to believe, but what if….”
“No!” Her husband, tall, gentle, and kind said
emphatically. “We will have no
blasphemy. Eddie, so simple and
different from the rest, he is, he has to be, he will -- ”
A warning
siren screeched the doomsday call. Steel shutters slammed shut on each window
in the hall. The only entrance to the Throne
Room instantly gated closed, and Command Central appeared on the great screen
on the wall.
In his cage below
The Below, Eddie looked up and saw the approach of the Number One’s Guard with
the Emperor himself in tow….
