~ THEN ~
A Christmas Story by Le Tron Part III
Madame looked up from the well-worn pages at the beloved faces
of her family and staff. ‘This is it,’
she thought. ‘This is the true meaning
of Christmas.’ Eager anticipation, undivided attention, and unconditional love
showed forth from each and everyone. ‘Yes,’ she thought to herself, ‘there is reason for this season!’
She found her place and continued to read aloud once again….
In
his cage below The Belowe, Eddie looked up and saw the approach of The Number
One’s Guard with the Emperor himself in tow.
Eddie
instinctively thrust his hand through the bars of his cage, but then quickly
withdrew it.
‘Wait,
I must,’ thought the simple one. ‘Is it so?
I must, I need to know.’
The
Emperor One’s Guards, with their flippers flapping in sync, came to a halt, and,
as if a command had been issued, the giant penguins parted in a silent shuffle,
as The Number One moved forth.
“You
may rise, and, in this instance and evermore, lift your eyes. You, my son, are
no longer cast to the ground. The ‘Tempest IV’ is in bound.
“Here!” the Giant Emperor Penguin pointed,
with flipper black as coal, to his monocled eye, “you regard me here now,
Eddie, Eddie no-more.”
Eddie
rose as he was told, head lifted high, except for his nose. His eyes looked into
those of The Number One. The end was now, and the “must know” began.
‘So
be it,’ thought Eddie, Eddie-no-more.
‘Now it time for them to see me,
as I am.’
As
Eddie rose, in silent command all members of the Guard fell to their guts, their
golden beaks in the sand.
The
door of the cage rolled back into the wall, and Edward proceeded, not a child at all. As Edward walked past the
Emperor, the Giant Penguin followed Edward
and
explained to the young prince that it was the time, the time of “must know”.
Queen
Ezra-Rye-Elle raised her deep, dark eyes to the large Command Central’s screen,
as she watched her only son, Edward, Eddie-no-more, walk down the dark, cold
stone corridor.
‘Does
he know that I am watching? Can he sense I am here? Where goes the child when
the man does appear?’ “So fast goes time, has it been forty years?”
“Yes,
my beloved Ella-Ella-Rye, and nigh on 13 since our Eddie did arrive. And so it is written, ‘From below The Below a
King will come forth, and a Kingdom will go.’”
“Not
born of above, not born of below, but given to me to protect and to grow, to
inherit the promise of the need for ‘must know.’ I can’t -- please stop, please stop it now, My Lord, I am
begging you, sire.”
King
Davide pulled Queen Ezra-Rye-Elle to him and soothed her troubled soul. “You
know the story and how it goes. When we first found the child he was pale, cold,
and blue. Part of what was salvaged from the end, you know that, too.
“We
thought he was a toy, not a real baby boy.
But he was for you. We wrapped
him in black and white, and lavender, too. We called him our son, Eddie the
simple-one. The oracle was fulfilled, and now the end has come.”
King
Davide gently kissed Queen Ezra-Rye-Elle’s forehead. She was his beloved one. The Queen looked deeply
into her husband’s eyes and whispered softly, “Thus we know the time is
nigh. We cannot remain forever. We must end to begin, just as we began....”
The
Belowe shifted and the Belowe heaved, and Edward ran to take his leave.
The Emperor and Guard flapped thunderously behind, and the “must know” burned
in each one’s mind.
